Bosch introduced the refrigerator on the blockchain with energy control

The home appliance supplier Bosch has developed a new refrigerator with Austrian energy company Wien Energie. Distributed registry technology at the heart of the smart refrigerator system will allow consumers to monitor and control power consumption. The novelty of home appliances is demonstrated at the ANON summit in Vienna. 

As it is written in the press release: the device is a sample of technology from the not very distant future, in which people can “safely and transparently” control energy consumption. The device is controlled by the application. Over time, it will allow users to become “active participants” in the energy market. Smart contracts are used to switch between different sources of electricity. 

For each kilowatt-hour consumed in the blockchain, a transaction and confirmation of the source of electricity is created. 

“This means that everyone will decide for himself whether to consume the energy produced by the photovoltaic system in the next building or the wind power station located on the way to work,” explains Wien Energie. 

In the coming months, the two companies intend to provide the device for use by several clients, and then reach a more ambitious level using the city blockchain infrastructure developed by Wien Energie and Riddle & Code. At this stage, about 100 clients will help assess the effectiveness of self-selection of electricity supply channels using the blockchain and smart meters. 

“The blockchain infrastructure is capable of generating new business models in the energy market. For example, charging stations will be able to use a computer protocol on the blockchain and automated contracts to buy electricity both from solar panels located on rooftops nearby and on exchanges, and then provide it for charging electric vehicles, ”said Wien Energie head Peter Gönitzer. 

This is not the first Bosch blockchain experience. Last November, Bosch and IOTA, a German blockchain startup, presented a device for collecting data on the Internet of Things.
